Can apple cider vinegar gummies help with weight loss? We spoke to a dietitian to find out what ACV actually does

Apple cider vinegar, or ACV as it’s known among enthusiasts, has long been hailed for its myriad health benefits. From lowering blood cholesterol to improving gut health, it seems like apple cider vinegar is a do-all elixir. But if there’s one benefit that encourages us to consume apple cider vinegar daily, is its supposed ability to help with weight loss.

If you’ve ever caught a whiff of apple cider vinegar or tried to down some of it, however, you already know that it can taste pretty… gross. Of course, you can make it more palatable by mixing it with a little honey, but it won’t really do much to get rid of its sour, acidic taste.

Thankfully, wellness and supplement brand AVALON is helping us get the benefits of ACV without the unpleasant taste by way of the new AVALON Apple Cider Vinegar Gummies. These gummies are packed with the same active ingredient in apple cider vinegar, and they’re also delicious enough to keep us coming back for more.

Before we introduce you to these gummies, we’ll be taking a closer look at what apple cider vinegar does. We chatted with Bonnie Lau, an accredited practising dietitian passionate about food, nutrition, and wellness who’s currently a senior dietitian at i-Kare, to see if ACV is really able to help us shed weight.

What is apple cider vinegar?

Apple cider vinegar is made from crushing fresh apples to release their juice, which is then mixed with bacteria and yeast to allow it to ferment – much like making beer or wine. These sugars are then turned into alcohol.

“In a second fermentation step, acetic acid-forming bacteria (acetobacter) is added, and the alcohol is converted into vinegar. This is what gives the vinegar its sour taste,” Bonnie explains.

This buildup of yeast and bacteria will form ‘The Mother’, a stringy mass that’s rich in enzymes, healthy bacteria, and acetic acid – all of which can improve digestion and overall gut health.

According to the dietitian, different types of vinegar contain acetic acid, except there’s a slight benefit to apple cider vinegar when compared to white vinegar. “[Apple cider vinegar] contains a small amount of prebiotic (pectin) and antioxidants (polyphenols),” Bonnie shares.

Can apple cider vinegar aid in weight loss?

Whether it actually helps us shed pounds, Bonnie says, “It may, but it’s not a miracle cure, [so] don’t expect huge results.”

“In one study, people who drank one tablespoon of ACV twice a day and went on a reduced-calorie diet lost 1.7kg more weight than people who just reduced their calories,” Bonnie shares. “Another study in Japanese women found that taking one or two tablespoons of ACV daily helped them lose an average of 1.2 and 1.7kg respectively.”

However, it’s difficult to point out which component helps with weight loss. “[Apple cider vinegar] may improve insulin sensitivity when eaten before a meal, which means there is potential for it to reduce blood glucose spikes. Indirectly in the long-term, this could help with weight loss,” Bonnie posits. She also mentions that ACV can help to suppress appetite naturally.

As with everything else, moderation is key when it comes to consuming apple cider vinegar. “If you have digestive problems, low potassium, diabetes or are taking medications, speak to a health professional before you start ACV,” Bonnie advises.

In excessive amounts, apple cider vinegar can present its own set of negative side effects too. “These include feelings of nausea, reflux, teeth erosion, throat irritation and the possibility of disturbing our body’s natural acid-base balance if excessive amounts are taken,” She warns. “So be careful to take it in the daytime, rinse with water afterwards, and don’t brush your teeth right after taking it.”

AVALON Apple Cider Vinegar Gummies: A tastier alternative to ACV

If you’re ready to jump onboard the ACV wagon, but you’re feeling a little uneasy about its taste, we found a yummy solution that retains the delicious taste of apples. AVALON Apple Cider Vinegar Gummies pack all that good stuff into tiny, tasty chewables.

Each gummy contains an increased amount of apple cider vinegar extract of 600mg – that’s equivalent to one shot of ACV per gummy. What’s more, the AVALON Apple Cider Vinegar Gummies actually contain ‘The Mother’, the protein-rich mass that’s packed with all the health benefits ACV has to offer.

Besides that, it’s formulated with pectin, which is a prebiotic that can help “feed” the probiotics in your digestive system to support digestion. A single gummy contains only 12 calories, so you can enjoy them as a guilt-free, diet-friendly snack. Plus, they’re gelatin-free, vegan, non-GMO, GMP-certified, and gluten-free.

Unlike other apple cider vinegar gummies on the market, the AVALON Apple Cider Vinegar Gummies are made with a team of health-boosting ingredients: pomegranate extract, beetroot extract, folic acid, vitamin B12, and purple carrot. These double down on nutritional benefits and anti-inflammatory properties.

Here’s what each ingredient can do for you:

  • Pomegranate extract: This powerful antioxidant fends off free radicals, protects your cells from damage, and reduces inflammation.
  • Beetroot extract: Rich in nitrates, beetroot extract helps to boost your stamina, improve blood flow, and lower blood pressure. A study also showed that it was able to lower cholesterol and triglycerides and increase HDL, or “good” cholesterol.
  • Folic acid: Also known as vitamin B9, folic acid helps with cell division and growth. It also prevents folate deficiency anaemia.
  • Vitamin B12: This essential vitamin keeps our nerve and blood cells healthy, and helps with energy production too.
  • Purple carrot: Purple carrots contain powerful antioxidants that can improve heart health, encourage weight loss, and reduce inflammation.

All you have to do is take one or two gummies a day to reap its benefits!

AVALON Apple Cider Vinegar Gummies: First impressions

When I cracked open a bottle of AVALON Apple Cider Vinegar Gummies, I was surprised to find gummies that were shaped like little apples – an adorable touch that makes them perfect for the ‘gram. They’re chewy and have a lovely sweet taste, a way better experience compared to making a sour face over a diluted mixture of apple cider vinegar.

As someone with a sweet tooth, I found it hard not to consume less than two gummies. Thankfully, the instructions on the bottle said I could take up to five gummies a day, which was great news. Still, I’ll try to stick to two gummies per day so I don’t go overboard.

So far, the AVALON Apple Cider Vinegar Gummies were easy to consume, and it’s something I’ll look forward to every morning. Plus, these candy-like supplements beat downing a glass of diluted ACV every day. I can’t wait to see what it can do for my waistline, skin, and health over time.

AVALON Apple Cider Vinegar Gummies retail for S$29.90 per bottle (60 gummies), and you can find them at Lazada, Qoo10, and Shopee. They will soon be available in Guardian, Unity and Watsons too!
